A close partnership between academia and industry has always been at the heart of ECMI. Today’s Industry Day reflects this mission by bringing together researchers, companies and public sector organisations to explore how mathematics is used to solve practical challenges.
The programme opened with welcome remarks by Assoc. Prof. Leonas Balaševičius, Director of the Department of Research Affairs at Kaunas University of Technology, who introduced participants to KTU’s research ecosystem and highlighted the opportunities for international research collaboration. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Paulius Palevičius then presented the workshops on mathematical solutions for business and industry organised by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at KTU.
Throughout the day, representatives from ILTE, Swedbank, Sodra, Telia, and Girteka will present practical examples of how mathematics, data analysis and modelling support innovation, digital transformation and decision-making in their organisations.
Participants will also attend a lecture by this year’s EMS/ECMI Lanczos Prize winner, Prof. Garth Wells, who will present the FEniCS Project—an open-source computing platform that has become one of the leading tools for finite element computing.
Later today, the panel discussion “Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges for Science, Education, and Industry” will bring together experts from academia and industry to discuss the rapidly growing role of artificial intelligence. The discussion will feature Kristijonas Graibus (Telia, Lithuania), Prof. Tomas Iešmantas (Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania), Joachim Linn (Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics, Germany), Aidas Malakauskas (Swedbank Baltics, Lithuania), Marek Teuerle (Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Poland), and Dietmar Hömberg (Weierstrass Institute, Germany).
The day will conclude with the ECMI Social Dinner at Mokslo Sala Science Museum, providing participants with another opportunity to continue discussions and build new collaborations.
Tomorrow, ECMI 2026 will conclude with its final scientific sessions and the closing ceremony.
