How can AI research effectively bridge the gap to industry and drive innovation in practice? In Rhineland-Palatinate, a dedicated initiative is tackling this challenge: the Ministry of Science, Further Education and Culture launched a program featuring »AI Pilots« (in German »KI-Lotsin«) to connect expertise with real-world applications.
The overall »AI Agenda« presented by the Ministry aims to double the funding, research, and networking efforts surrounding this key technology in the coming years. A crucial component of this initiative is the appointment of contact persons – the AI Pilots. Their role is to serve as a bridge between academia and industry, helping to identify and maximize the potential of AI within institutions.
Our institute director, Prof. Dr. Anita Schöbel, was the first AI Pilot in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2020. She’s an internationally recognized expert in »Artificial Intelligence and Mobility« and leads a variety of innovative AI projects. Together with Dr. Henrike Stephani, advisor to the AI pilot, both scientists provide guidance and support to companies looking to successfully implement AI technologies in the mobility sector. In addition, they are organizing a series of lectures and informational events.
New AI Pilot »AI and Life Sciences«
The dynamic developments in the fields of »Biotechnology and Artificial Intelligence« as well as the growing demand in science and industry have made it necessary to establish an AI pilot for the application area »AI and Life Sciences«. With Professor Dr. Stefan Kramer from Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU), another outstanding personality was appointed as an AI pilot in August 2024.
We are excited to be part of the movement toward integrating AI into businesses, as it has the potential to significantly enhance processes and develop innovative solutions. But here’s the thing: the goal isn’t to replace human intelligence, but to complement it with the unique capabilities of computers and learning algorithms.
