Kaunas. Science, Networking and Lithuanian Traditions

The second day of ECMI 2026 has begun, bringing participants back together for another day of scientific discussions and collaboration in Kaunas.

Yesterday’s programme concluded with the plenary lecture by Prof. Paola Francesca Antonietti (Politecnico di Milano, Italy), entitled “The Mathematics of Neurodegenerative Diseases.” The lecture explored how mathematical modelling contributes to understanding neurodegenerative diseases and supports advances in biomedical research.

In the evening, participants gathered for the ECMI Welcome Reception, where discussions continued in a relaxed atmosphere. Guests enjoyed traditional Lithuanian cheeses and honey, while members of the KTU Folk Dance Ensemble “Nemunas” introduced them to Lithuanian folk dances. Many participants joined in, making it a memorable start to the conference week.

Today’s programme features plenary lectures by Prof. Paweł Dłotko (Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland), presenting “Shape Matters: Topological Data Analysis for Understanding Complex Systems,” and Prof. Lorenzo Pareschi (Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom; University of Ferrara, Italy), who will present “The Mathematics Behind Plasma Fusion: From Multiscale Dynamics to Learning and Control.”

Alongside the plenary lectures, participants are taking part in parallel sessions dedicated to a broad range of topics in industrial and applied mathematics.

Tomorrow, the conference programme continues with the ECMI 2026 Conference Excursion, giving participants the opportunity to discover more of Kaunas and Lithuania while continuing conversations beyond the lecture halls.
