MOX. The NEMESIS SyG-ERC Project: NEw generation MEthods for numerical SImulationS

NEMESIS – NEw generation MEthods for numerical SImulationS – is an ERC Synergy Grant project (Project No. 101115663) funded in the 2023 Synergy call for a duration of six years. The four Principal Investigators of the project are:

· Paola F. Antonietti, Professor of Numerical Analysis and Head of the MOX Laboratory, Politecnico di Milano;

· Lourenço Beirão da Veiga, Professor of Numerical Analysis, University of Milano-Bicocca;

· Daniele A. Di Pietro, Professor of Numerical Analysis, Université de Montpellier (corresponding PI);

· Jérôme Droniou, Research Director, CNRS.

NEMESIS’s goal is to develop a novel generation of numerical simulators to accurately and efficiently address multiphysics and multiscale problems arising in a wide range of scientific and engineering applications. NEMESIS tackles some of the major challenges of contemporary scientific computing, which stem from complex geometries, strongly heterogeneous materials, nonlinear phenomena, and interactions among physical processes that evolve across widely different spatial and temporal scales.

A key point will be the use of polytopal meshes and the higher-level point of view provided by polytopal construction, as well as the development of innovative tools in discrete functional analysis, the design of advanced multilevel algorithms for the efficient solution of large-scale linear and nonlinear problems, and the enhancement and acceleration through computational learning techniques.

The project’s outcomes are translated into advanced open-source software tools, expanding the predictive capabilities of scientific simulation and supporting applications that are increasingly relevant in industrial, technological and environmental contexts.
