We are sad to announce that Mario Primicerio has passed away.
Mario made a significant contribution to the development of industrial mathematics, serving as ECMI council member for many years. In 2009-2010 he was the main promotor of the Forward Look Mathematics and Industry, a strategic project of the European Science Foundation to set up science agendas for Europe, and he was one of the main responsible of the birth of EU MATHS IN, a European Network for Industrial Mathematics co founded by ECMI and EMS.
A prominent figure in the Italian and international mathematical community, he earned a degree in Physics in 1962 and, starting in 1970, taught at the University of Florence, where he became a full professor in the field of Mathematical Physics. He held several important positions in national and international scientific organizations. In particular, from 2001 to 2008 he was President of the Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics (SIMAI), from 2006 to 2012, he was Chair of the Applied Mathematics Committee of the European Mathematical Society, and from 2007 to 2015, he served on the Board of the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM).
European applied and industrial mathematics and ECMI have lost a brilliant scientist and a leading figure, also greatly recognized for his civic and political engagement.
