New Quantum Computing Activities in Kaiserslautern

In cooperation with IBM Germany, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is establishing a national competence network in the research field of quantum computing. With the participation of currently eleven Fraunhofer Institutes, specialist expertise is being pooled in regional competence centers.
On our Institute the Center for Quantum HPC has been established. The focus of the Competence Center Quantum Computing Rhineland-Palatinate is on quantum High Performance Computing. Central research questions are: Which concrete application scenarios are suitable for computing with a quantum computer? How algorithms for this can be developed and translated into applications?
he Fraunhofer experts will offer training courses for industry and science in the field of »quantum computing«, thus also ensuring the transfer of knowledge to the region. Interested regional university and non-university institutions and companies will also be involved in the competence center within the framework of joint projects, through contract research or through memberships.
Here on our website, you will find current, selected projects and the appropriate fields of application – from financial mathematics to the energy sector or material simulation.

QUIP Brings Young Quantum Scientists to Rhineland-Palatinate
One of these projects is called »Quantum Initiative Rhineland-Palatinate« (QUIP). In this project we support Young Scientists with targeted measures together with our project partners on the topic of quantum computing (QC) and quantum technologies (QT).
As quantum computing becomes ubiquitous, today’s students will see a very different qubits job market in a few years. How can we best prepare for these new opportunities and give companies a head start? How can we identify, develop and support talents now?
One answer is »QUIP« – the Quantum Initiative Rhineland-Palatinate. Under this name, together with our partners, we specifically support young researchers with measures on the topic of Quantum Computing (QC) and Quantum Technologies (QT). The project offers a detailed and broad research program for training and further education as well as networking. For example, you can currently apply for doctoral positions (PhD) with a focus on »quantum computing« or internships!
And there’s more: In QUIP, we will organize summer and/or winter schools in the future. The »schools« take place for a fortnight each and teach scientific, but also social skills according to a structured curriculum. Anticipated topics are, of course, »quantum computing« or »quantum sensor technology«.
The RPTU (Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landa), the DFKI (German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence) and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz are all on the team for this project, which is funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Science and Health (RLP MWG). Join us on the exciting quantum journey!

Workshop EnerQuant – Quantum Algorithms for the Energy Industry
Furthermore, there will be a workshop on the joint project »EnerQuant: Energy Fundamental Modeling with Quantum Algorithms«. Our researchers take advantages of quantum computing for the energy industry. In the workshop, taking place on June 13 and 14, we will present the results from the project. The aim is to enable a multilateral exchange between researchers in the energy field, with and without quantum computing, as well as users from all areas of the energy market and the energy industry. https://www.itwm.fraunhofer.de/workshop-enerquant-en
