Season’s Greetings from the Presidents

Dear colleagues, friends, authors and readers of the ECMI blog,

The year we are ending was filled with activities and events. The 22nd ECMI Conference on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, organized in Wroclaw was very successful, with more than 300 participants, 9 plenary talks and a new ECMI honorary member. Starting with ECMI reception for all participants, the conference opened with announcement of our traditional prize winners – Anile and Wacker prizes, followed by a week of interesting talks and an Industrial day. The participants also enjoyed rich social life in the nice city of Wroclaw. We would like to use this opportunity to thank the organizers, led by Krzysztof Burnecki, once again for making the conference successful and enjoyable.

We are very happy to announce an enlargement of our network with 3 new academic members. Furthermore, we would like to welcome the new industrial members, D-fine GmbH and Siemens AG and we look forward to cooperate with them.

The Council, Educational Committee and Research and Innovation Committee had regular meetings in hybrid fashion, and we are happy to announce that the Council is now enlarged, to include representatives of all countries that have ECMI nodes.

An important development in the educational activities is the approval of the third track in ECMI master programs – Data Science, that will allow us to increase the number of students enrolled in ECMI related master programmes at the teaching centers. Our traditional event, Mathematical Modelling Week was held in Szeged in July 2023. The fourth students competition was successfuly completed and the winning team presented their results at the Modelling Week.

Editorial activities were focused on the Journal of Mathematics in Industry  and we are happy to announce that our journal got a quite good two years impact factor of 2.6. The open access policy is supported by ECMI and the authors from ECMI nodes are entitled to APC vaiwer. The  annual report for 2022 with some updates from 2023 is available on the blog. A couple of European Study Group with Industry have been organized in hybrid fashion.

ECMI is continuing its activities and cooperation with other organizations like EMS, through Committee for Applied and Interdisciplinary Activities, ICIAM, Asian-Pacific Consortium for Mathematics for Industry and EU-MATHS-IN for the benefit of mathematical community in Europe. A result of cooperation with EMS is the joint Lanczos Prize for Mathematical Software, established in order to reward and recognise exceptional research in the development of mathematical software. The call for prize is open and the first prize will be delivered at EMS conference in Seville in 2024.

Cooperation with APCMfI included participation of Alessandra Micheletti in a minisymposium devoted to industrial mathematics at ICIAM conference in Tokyo and APCMfI annual meeting in Fukuoka where Neil Budko represented ECMI. We also increased our efforts in cooperation with African mathematical community with a number of ongoing activities, that will be developed also in cooperation with ICIAM.

The next year will start with a new leadership of ECMI as Alessandra Micheletti will be the president and Elena Celledoni will be the vice president for the next three years. ECMI has a new director,  Claudia Nunes, while the Educational Committee will be chaired by Danijela Rajter Ciric and Natasa Krejic will chair Research and Innovation Committee with Dietmar Hoemberg as the vice chair. We would like to use this opportunity to offer our sincere thanks to Poul G. Hjorth, our former Director, for his valuable service of many years as well as our thanks to Christophe Picard who chaired the Educational Committee in the last three years.

We would like to encourage you to continue following our blog, to support ECMI activities and to contact us with new ideas and initiatives. New members and new ideas from everybody are particularly welcome and we should continue to be the consortium of cooperation and diversity across Europe. We will do our best to continue with activities for students, joint projects with industry and providing networking opportunities.

Have a wonderful holiday season and a very successful and happy 2024!

Nataša Krejić, ECMI President
