Challenges in Computational Mathematics in summer internships for students

The Laboratory of Computational Mathematics (LCM) of the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra challenged undergraduate and master’s students with a strong mathematical component to embrace computational mathematics problems closely linked to real-world applications. The initiative includes seven R&D four-week internships and a workshop with guest speakers and a poster session for students to present their final works. The list of R&D internships covers a wide range of topics, like cryptography, image processing, clustering, polytopes and graph theory. The internship program runs under the “Summer with Science” program, promoted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

The main objective of the activities of the LCM is to foster new trends in mathematical research in close connection with real industrial problems. Lab activities include mathematical modelling, high-performance computing, and numerical software development. Its portfolio includes more than twenty projects, many of them with industrial partners, namely hospitals, banks, data and software companies.
