As ECMI 2026 enters its final day, the conference is drawing to a close after a week of scientific exchange, international collaboration and discussions on the latest developments in industrial and applied mathematics.
Yesterday’s Industry Day highlighted the close connection between mathematics and real-world applications. Representatives from ILTE, Swedbank, Sodra, Telia, and Girteka shared practical examples of how mathematical methods, data analysis and artificial intelligence support innovation and decision-making across different sectors. Participants also attended a lecture by this year’s EMS/ECMI Lanczos Prize winner, Prof. Garth Wells, who presented the FEniCS Project, one of the world’s leading open-source platforms for finite element computing.
A highlight of the day was the panel discussion “Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges for Science, Education, and Industry,” bringing together experts from academia and industry to discuss the growing role of artificial intelligence in research, higher education and business.
The day concluded with the ECMI Social Dinner at Mokslo Sala Science Museum, where participants continued conversations, exchanged ideas and strengthened international collaborations in an informal setting.
Today’s programme features the final plenary lectures by Prof. Mayur Pal (Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania), presenting “The Role of Mathematics and AI in Accelerating the Energy Transition: Applications in CCUS, Geothermal Systems, and Hydrogen Storage,” and Prof. Rita Laura D’Ecclesia (Sapienza University of Rome, Italy), whose lecture, “Integrated Risk Management: How Insurance and Banking Converge in the Era of Financial Innovation,” concludes the scientific programme.
As ECMI 2026 comes to a close, we would like to thank all participants, speakers, organisers and partners for making this conference a memorable event. We hope you enjoyed your time in Kaunas, leave with new ideas, valuable professional connections and fond memories of Lithuania, and we look forward to welcoming you again at future ECMI events.
