Trondheim. A new edition of Mathematics Meets Industry at NTNU – August 14-15, 2025

We are organizing a two-day conference in Trondheim called “Math Meets Industry” with a focus on PhD education in the mathematical sciences, as well as related career prospects in industry and in the public sector. The event includes six keynote speakers, special sessions on education and funding opportunities, partnering between industry and academia, open science presentations from PhD students, and mathematics entertainment in the evening.

We have asked the keynote speakers to tell us about their scientific and entrepreneurial activity but also to spend at least a few minutes of their talk presenting their views on what are the present and future demands and expectations of the labor market from young people with a PhD in Mathematics or Statistics.

We want to set up a program of great interest to the young researchers attending the conference. We aim at a program which is similar to the 2022 and 2016 editions: https://www.ntnu.edu/imf/mathmeetsindustry, https://www.ntnu.edu/mathmeetsindustry.

We encourage PhD students attending this conference to give a short presentation. These presentations are split into two categories: outreach talks and research talks. There will be prizes awarded to outstanding students in both categories.

Outreach talks. These talks should be aimed at non mathematical audience and should be understandable to laymen. There should be no equations in slides for this category of talks. These talks should take some inspiration from a science slam or a TED talk.

Research talks. These talks may be more mathematical than the outreach talks, but should be nonspecialised and understandable to all PhD students in the audience. While including equations is permitted we encourage speakers not to include too many.

Partnering event. It aims to encourage interactions between academia and industry. The partnering event is integrated into the conference. Everyone registered for the conference can join. We plan to invite a number of industry partners. To increase engagement participants will be split into groups and will rotate, so every participant has the opportunity to talk with every partner.

The venue will be on campus at NTNU.

Organizers: Elena Celledoni, James Jackaman, Brynjulf Owren with the support of many colleagues at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NTNU.
