Inaugural lecture by Wil Schilders

To emphasize the importance of mathematics for industry and society – this is what the Dutch mathematician Wil Schilders, ECMI President in 2010 and 2011, will give his inaugural public lecture on October 27, 2020. The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the University of Wuppertal. Due to the limited number of participants* caused by the corona pandemic, the lecture will be broadcast live on the Internet via zoom. The event language is English.

The mathematician Wil Schilders is holder of the fourth Dr. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid Guest Professorship at the University of Wuppertal. His visit planned for the past summer semester has been postponed to the winter semester 2020/2021 due to the corona pandemic. The professor for Scientific Computing in the Industry at the Technical University in Eindhoven (Netherlands) is an expert in the field of developing mathematical methods that are used for simulating products and processes in industry. In the winter semester he will offer a lecture course entitled Mimetic numerical methods, including structure preservation and port-Hamiltonian systems.

Professor Schilders’ stay in Wuppertal is possible thanks to Dr. Dr. h.c. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid: On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the Wuppertal entrepreneur had donated 500,000 euros to the university to establish a guest professorship. It is to be awarded once a year over a period of ten years and once in each faculty. More information (in german) on this guest professorship can be found here : https://www.uni-wuppertal.de/de/universitaet/gastprofessur/
