Computational Engineering Retreat in Seeheim, Germany

On April 8-9, 2019, the annual retreat of the Graduate School CE and the Centre for CE took place at the Lufthansa Conference Centre in Seeheim. After a short welcome by Prof. Schäfer, Prof. Gabriele Gramelsberger from RWTH Aachen gave a lecture about “Philosophy of Computational Science”, which provided some valuable insights into computational research from a different point of view. The afternoon plenum started with an introduction of several groups within CE at TU Darmstadt, namely by Dr. Erion Gjonaj, Prof. Christian Hasse, Prof. Hongbin Zhang and Prof. Suad Jakirlic. These short introductions already gave a good example of the broad range of research within the field of CE at TU Darmstadt. This impression was even increased looking into the following three poster sessions, where all doctoral researchers presented their research topics. Like in the previous years, this provided a good overview about ongoing activities and a platform for interesting discussions. At the end of the first day, an informal get-together gave chance to continue exchange.

Prof. Michael Möller from University of Siegen gave an introductory lecture, “Deep Learning in Imaging and Beyond”, about Machine Learning techniques as well as possible applications. Afterwards, two parallel workshops were offered:

  • “From Matlab to C++” held by Felix Wolf and Andreas Pels,
  • “Numerical Testing” held by Florian Kummer.

These workshops completed another inspiring retreat, which will be continued next year.
