UpQuantVal – A Strong Center for Quantum Research in the Upper Rhine Region

Quantum Science has developed rapidly in recent years, and technologies such as Quantum Sensors and Quantum Computing have the potential to fundamentally change our digital lives. To establish a strong center for Quantum Science in Europe, the »INTERREG« project »UpQuantVal« was launched this year. This pioneering project brings together institutions from Germany, France and Switzerland, including players from the fields of research, business and politics.

The project was officially launched earlier this week, on March 3 at the European Quantum Science Center as part of Quantum Week on the occasion of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology – the meeting in Strasbourg marking the collaboration of 19 parties from the fields of Quantum Science and Technology. The aim is to jointly create synergies in education, research and specialized infrastructures.

Quantum Science in Europe: Mediating between Industry and Research

Our specific role as Fraunhofer ITWM is to bridge the gap between industry and research. Through our contract research, we work with industrial partners, enhancing our ability to assess market potential. At the same time, our own research gives us the ability to offer our expertise in various applications of Quantum Computing, such as Quantum Machine Learning, Quantum Optimization and Simulation. Moreover, we benefit from additional resources and access to state-of-the-art quantum hardware through the Fraunhofer competence network. Like us, each party brings its own unique expertise and resources, contributing to our collective goal.

This project is funded by the European Union, through the »INTERREG« program, which promotes cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation between different regions in Europe. Beyond the scientific and technological impact, the project aims to create new jobs, promote the development of expertise in the region and strengthen a sustainable network between researchers, companies and public institutions. Planned activities include cross-border training, the exchange of expertise and long-term communication and cooperation strategies to ensure the sustainability of this initiative.

We are excited to embark on this new project over the next three years.
