Limerick. University of Limerick and MACSI to host the ICEDIM Women in Mathematics Day 2024

Romina Gabbro Womans Masci event 2024

Dr Romina Gaburro, Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, who will chair the event at UL

The ICEDIM Women in Mathematics Day 2024 will highlight the historical under-representation of women in science particularly in mathematics, and the ongoing global gender imbalance in the field. This annual event, which has been organised across Ireland for the past 14 years, was initially pioneered by the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) and the National Centre for Excellence in STEM Education (formerly known as NCE-MSTL) at the University of Limerick in 2010.

Recognising the significance of this issue, the Irish Mathematical Society (IMS) formed the Irish Committee for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Mathematics (ICEDIM) in 2022 to tackle gender imbalance in mathematics nationally.

This year, ICEDIM, chaired by Dr. Romina Gaburro from MACSI, is organising the Women in Mathematics Day at the University of Limerick on May 10, 2024 (https://www.ul.ie/scieng/schools-and-departments/department-mathematics-and-statistics/icedim-women-in-mathematics). The event, hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and MACSI, will feature invited speakers such as Prof. Natalia Kopteva (MACSI and University of Limerick Research Integrity Officer), Prof. Sinead Ryan (Dean of Research at Trinity College Dublin) and Dr. Rachel Quinlan (University of Galway and IMS Vice-President). The event will be registered with the May 12 initiative platform, a global online initiative celebrating women in mathematics worldwide, in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman and Iranian mathematician to receive the Fields Medal in 2014.
