The 141st European Study Group with Industry, ESGI141, University College Dublin

ESGI141 is a week-long workshop that provides a forum for industrial scientists to work alongside academics on a project submitted by the industrial participant. ESGI’s started with the first Study Group in Oxford in 1968 and now there are 5-7 meetings each year across Europe. A study group can accommodate 4 industrial projects, which are tackled by 40-80 academics ranging from PhD students to Professors.

 

Workshop format:

• On the first day, the industrial representative outlines their project and their objectives in a 40-min presentation.
• In the following days a group of 10-20 academics (Professors and PhD students) are devoted to brainstorming, modelling and solving the problem closely guided by the industrial representative.
• On the Friday, the progress and recommended routes forward are presented by a member of each group of academics in a 40-min presentation.
• Reports on the problem deliberations are produced after the meeting.

Who can participate within the study group?

This is open to all academic staff and researchers, research assistants, and postgraduate students working within the mathematical and statistical sciences. Participants are free to choose which projects they would like to work on. Some people like to work intensively on one project, others prefer to contribute to a number of projects.

What type of problem do we have to solve? Please see below a list of some problems at previous ESGIs

• Energy and utilities: 101 projects submitted to date including: Electricity price predictability and quantifying customer suitability.; Oil Blending: Mixing and Contamination; Piped water cooling of concrete dams.
• Environment: 34 projects submitted to date including: Modelling and Optimization of Algae Growth.; Modelling of selection and mating decisions in tree breeding programs.; An objective method to associate local weather extremes with characteristic circulation structures.
• Finance: 39 projects submitted to date including: Calibrating the mean reverting jump diffusion model to Australian spot electricity prices.; Optimization of commodity portfolio management.; Estimating the volatility of property assets.
• Medical and pharmaceutical: 58 projects submitted to date including: Reaction-diffusion models of decontamination.; Optimal Treatment Rate During an Influenza Pandemic in the Presence of Drug-Resistance Emergence.; Constitutive Models for Tumour Classification.; Classification of Chemical Compound Pharmacophore Structures.

Is there a charge to take part?

There is no charge to take part. Lunch and dinner will be provided for all participants throughout the week. We have a limited amount of free full-board accommodation for participants outside Dublin. Travel expenses must be paid for by the participants.
