MODCLIM International Dissemination Seminar

On September 13, 2016 Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WUST), Poland, hosted MODCLIM International Dissemination Seminar, which main objective was  to disseminate the results of 2-year MODCLIM (Modeling Clinic for Industrial Mathematics) project in the framework of  Erasmus Plus – Strategic Partnership Program, funded by the European Commission through the Education Culture and Audiovisual Executive Agency. The seminar was addressed to the university community, scientific community, media, high school teachers, the industrial sector as well as other institutions.  It was organized by Prof. Agnieszka Jurlewicz from the Faculty of Pure and Applied Mathematics, WUST,  together with the project coordinators, Dr. Juan Martin Rocha and Ms. Nada Khoury-Nassour from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, and Prof. Matti Heilio from the Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland.

The seminar was opened by WUST Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations, Prof. Andrzej Trochimczuk, Dean of the WUST Faculty of Pure and Applied Mathematics, Prof. Krzysztof Stempak, ECMI President, Prof. Dietmar Hömberg, and Ms. Katarzyna Sumisławska from European Commission Representation Office (Poland). Then the MODCLIM project partners, instructors, and participants presented their experiences in testing the MODCLIM  concept of academic research training and education of industrial mathematics, combining elements from earlier successful ideas. Dr. Juan Rocha Martin, Ms. Nada Khoury-Nassour, Prof. Matti Heiliö and Prof. Thomas Götz (University of Koblenz, Germany) described the details of the  MODCLIM aims and cycle structure. The MODCLIM participants, Mr. Michał Balcerek and Mr. Marek Skarupski (PhD students from WUST),  shared their impressions and new skills learned by the MODCLIM training, while the MODCLIM instructors, Prof. Susana Serna (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain) and Dr. Łukasz Płociniczak (WUST) presented the results of the supervised projects (‘’Super-resolution recovery of video imaging through turbulence’’ and ‘’Eye Structure Modelling’’, respectively).

The last point of the seminar was the panel discussion on the proposed form of education of mathematics-in-industry area with Prof. Poul G. Hjorth from the Technical University of Denmark as a moderator. The key speakers were Prof. Matti Heiliö, Prof. Dietmar Hömberg, Mr. Marek Kobiec from GlobalTechHub ( Poland, http://globaltechhub.pl/kontakt.html) and Mr. Szymon Sobieszek, student of Applied Mathematics, WUST (Poland). The topics discussed were related to the problems of cooperation between industry and mathematicians, and to improvement of education in math for industry, also in the MODCLIM experience context. In connection of the Dissemination Seminar in Wrocław, the final project meeting of MODCLIM was held. The summary of the two year experience was analyzed, financial reporting was prepared. The consortium also discussed about plans to apply funding to continue the activity.
