Study Groups with Industry

Study Groups with Industry

Study Groups with Industry are an internationally recognised method of technology transfer between academic mathematicians and industry. These week-long workshops provide a forum for industrial scientists to work alongside academic mathematicians on problems of direct industrial relevance.

The success of the Study Groups’ unique format, which uses problems presented by industry as a basis for mathematical research, is demonstrated by the extent to which it has been copied around the world and is now extending into other areas where mathematics may be applied. The European Study Groups with Industry (ESGI) started with the first Study Group in Oxford in 1968 and now there are 5-7 meetings held annually in different European countries.

Reports from Study Groups around the world are contained in Mathematics In Industry Reports, hosted by Cambridge University Press. MIIR is an open-access fully searchable repository in which each Study Group report is given a DOI to aid discoverability. ECMI have sponsored the migration of 100 past Study Group reports of significance from the Mathematics in Industry Information Service, which remains as a static repository of historic reports.

The ESGI Handbook aims to compile the knowledge and experience acquired to date throughout Europe.

Below we first list upcoming European Meetings, followed by a list of international study groups (this list is just starting so is currently rather small, hopefully it will grow). Subsequently we provide links for past meetings and outcomes. If you wish to add to either list or are planning to organise an ESGI, please contact the ESGI co-ordinator Prof. Tim Myers, coordinator_esgi@ecmi-indmath.org.

The list of upcoming and past European study groups can be found here.
