SUMMARY:18th Conference on Computer Science and Intelligence Systems (FedCSIS 2023)
DESCRIPTION:The 18th Conference on Computer Science and Intelligence Systems (FedCSIS 2023) cordially invites you to contribute a Technical Session (conference\, symposium\, workshop\, consortium meeting\, project dissemination meeting\, special session\, etc.). The FedCSIS conferences consist of five Tracks that contain Technical Sessions. Many of them are the recurring yearly events\, but we also solicit and welcome proposals for new Technical Sessions\, until November 14\, 2022. Moreover\, the existing events that would like to join the FedCSIS conference series\, are also welcome. The Technical Sessions can run over any span of time within the conference dates; from half-day to three days.\nFedCSIS is a large rigorous scientific conference staged across Europe. Annually\, it attracts ~300 submissions from ~40 countries from around the world. Papers are accepted in three categories: regular (full and short)\, position\, and communication. All regular\, presented\, papers are submitted to IEEE Xplore Digital Library\, and many are offered post-publication opportunities (journals\, Springer volumes\, etc.) after appropriate extensions and changes. Position and communication papers are published in separate volumes of the Annals of Computer Science and Information Systems series. All papers are published with ISBN\, ISSN and DOI numbers\, and submitted to\, and indexed in\, the most influential indexing services. Since 2012\, the FedCSIS Proceedings are indexed in SCOPUS.\nAny newly proposed Technical Session will be evaluated on the basis of scientific/technical interest and/or its relevance to practitioners in its topics\, the clarity of the proposal in addressing the requested information\, the innovativeness of the topics\, level of correspondence and “value-added” to the denoted FedCSIS track\, i.e.: \nAdvanced Artificial Intelligence in Applications\nComputer Systems and Simulations\nNetwork Systems and Applications\nInformation Technology for Business & Society\nSoftware and Systems Development \nCall for Papers for Technical Sessions will be announced by three means: (1) by FedCSIS Chairs in generic Calls for Conference Papers\, to reach out to the computer science and intelligence systems researchers at large; (2) by Track Chairs in Calls for Track Papers\, to reach out to the researchers specifically interested in track topics; (3) by Technical Session Chairs in Calls for Technical Session Papers\, to reach out to the professional communities involved in research addressed by the Technical Session. All papers will have to be submitted to the FedCSIS Conference System (EasyChair). The submitters will have to select a Track/Technical Session (event) within which their paper will be reviewed for acceptance.\nTechnical Session proposals should include the following information (3 pages maximum): \nThe nature of the Technical Session (conference\, symposium\, workshop\, consortium meeting\, project dissemination meeting\, special session\, etc.).\nThe title and acronym of the Technical Session\, and the list of topics.\nA brief explanation of why the proposed event will fit into the FedCSIS aims and program.\nThe contact information of the Technical Session chairs\, including links to their personal websites\, and an overview of previous experiences with organization of scientific events.\nPreliminary list of PC members who have agreed (or are likely to agree) to join.\nIndication of the expected number of papers/attendees.\nInformation about planned post-publications of extended and revised papers in high-quality journals\, edited volumes\, etc. \nTechnical Session organizers should email their proposals (in a single pdf file) by November 22\, 2021 to the FedCSIS Secretariat at: secretariat@fedcsis.org\nMore information concerning FedCSIS and its scientific\, organization and financial rules can be found at: https://www.fedcsis.org \nShare\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:online HACKATHON – inFer GW4 network “Fertility: In Vitro\, In Silico\, In Clinico”
DESCRIPTION:Put on your thinking caps\, show some team spirit and win cash prizes! \nWe invite students and researchers at all levels and from any organisation or country to participate! Participants will work in teams to analyse real-world data related to key challenges in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). The challenges will be released online on 12th February and participants will have until the 18th of February\, midnight to submit their solutions. \nPrizes will be awarded to the first three winning teams: \n1st place – 500 GBP\, 2nd place – 300 GBP\, 3rd place – 200 GBP \nThe challenges will be released on 12th February 2024\, 10am\, on the inFer website here. Please register here by the 15th of February. \nThe winners will be revealed at the 2nd networking event of the InFer network\, which is hosted by the University of Bristol on the 22nd of February 2024 (hybrid event). You can see more details and register for the latter event here. \nTeams can have from two to five members. We encourage teams to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach. \nThe participants should include a narrative explaining their problem-solving methodology\, and outcomes reached. Submissions should include a clear and concise description of max. 2000 words\, along with any necessary documentation or instructions. You would also need to provide a summary that could be advertised to and be understandable by the general public\, up to 200 words. \nWe require that participants create a GitHub repository where their final solution can be uploaded\, together with a ‘README’ mark-up page outlining the specific challenge aims and objectives\, the methods followed\, and the solution produced. In addition to source code\, we encourage outputs that highlight the solution in action e.g. videos and animations. You can join GitHub with an individual account and collectively create and join a ‘team’ but note that if you have your own repository that is fine as long as it is made publicly available. \nAll entries i.e. code repositories\, must clearly state the team name\, the challenge\, and the solution name (e.g. ‘TeamName_ChallengeName_SolutionTitle’). Please use this naming convention to aid management of and access to the materials. All source code produced must be made open access. \nAn excellent winning entry in a different Hackathon can be found here. \nTo submit your solution\, please go to the Hackathon page and scroll down to find the submission form. Detailed terms and conditions are found on the website. \nFor further information\, please contact us (kaourik@cardiff.ac.uk\, woolleyt1@cardiff.ac.uk). \nInFer is an academia-industry\, multidisciplinary network aiming to improve the success rates of In Vitro Fertilization\, led by Cardiff Mathematics (Katerina Kaouri and Thomas Woolley). It is currently funded by the GW4 alliance (Bristol\, Bath\, Cardiff and Exeter universities). \nShare\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:4th IMA Conference on Inverse Problems from Theory to Application
DESCRIPTION:11-13 September 2024\nUniversity of Bath\, 3 West North\, Claverton Down\, Bath BA2 7AY\n#IMAInverse \nInverse problems are widespread in many varied fields such as medical and satellite imaging\, biology\, astronomy\, geophysics\, environmental sciences\, computer vision\, energy\, finance\, and defence. These problems are inverse in the sense that they arise from seeking to use a mathematical or physical model “backwards” to indirectly determine a quantity of interest from the effect that this quantity causes on some observed data.\nA main challenge resulting from using models “backwards” to measure causes from their effects is that solutions are often not well posed\, i.e.\, not unique and/or unstable with respect to small perturbations in the data. This difficulty has stimulated an important amount of research and innovation at the interface of applied mathematics\, statistics\, engineering\, physics\, and other fields\, leading to great social and economic benefit through impact on science\, medicine\, and engineering.\nThe aim of this conference is to bring together the applied mathematics\, statistics\, machine learning\, engineering\, physics and industrial communities around the topic of inverse problems to discuss recent developments and open challenges in theory\, methodology\, computational algorithms\, and applications. We welcome industrial representatives\, doctoral students\, early career and established academics working in this field to attend. \nTopics of interest include\, for example\,\n• Inverse problems in mathematical and computational imaging.\n• Inverse problems in science\, medicine\, engineering\, and other fields. \n• Model‐based and data‐driven methods for solving inverse \n• Optimisation\, statistical\, and machine learning methods for solving inverse problems.\n• Mathematical theory for inverse problems.\n• Deterministic and stochastic computational methods and algorithms. \nCall for Presentations/posters \nContributions will be accepted for the conference based on a 200 word abstract for oral or poster presentation. We welcome abstracts to be submitted by 15th March 2024. https://my.ima.org.uk Please indicate whether your title is intended for oral “presentation” or “poster” presentation. \nNote: If you are an IMA Member or you have previously registered for an IMA conference\, then you are already on our database. SUMMARY:Workshop "Mathematics for Smart Energy"
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce our workshop on “Mathematics for Smart Energy”\, November 4-6\, 2025 at WIAS\, Berlin. \nThe workshop brings together mathematicians and engineers from academia and industry to discuss mathematical challenges and solutions related to Smart Energy applications. Smart Energy is a collective term for intelligent technologies in the fields of energy conversion\, storage\, transmission\, and consumption control. \nThese areas cover the entire value chain of the energy industry and include concepts like smart grid\, smart metering\, smart home\, and smart city. The increasingly decentralized energy supply with local energy converters such as wind\, solar\, hydro\, and biogas power plants is a key factor in smart energy. Another one is the growing electro-mobility sector\, where smart charging and random arrivals pose important research questions. The link to and stability of the distribution network may also need to be accounted for\, especially when fleets of electric vehicles are considered. \nMathematical aspects to be discussed include but are not limited to stochastic and bilevel optimization\, multi-agent problems in energy and markets\, port-Hamiltonian modeling of power grids\, as well as distributed and online optimization. \nAll relevant information and the registration form can be found at https://wias-berlin.de/workshops/Ma4SmEn25/.\nWe hope to see in November in Berlin. If you have any further questions about the workshop\, please do not hesitate to contact us. \nWith kind regards\, \nWim van Ackooij (EDF)\, Rene Henrion and Dietmar Hömberg (WIAS) \nShare\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:The Water Sector Meets Mathematics: V-KEMS Virtual Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nDeveloped in partnership with Stream\, V-KEMS is running a three-day virtual study group that aims to bring together mathematical sciences and other disciplines to address challenges involved in the water sector. \nBackground\nWater companies aim to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of their leakage management strategies\, yet current forecasting and operational approaches fall short in capturing the true drivers and behaviours of leakage across their networks. Leakage forecasts are typically generated by averaging historical weekly changes\, a method that overlooks contextual factors such as weather patterns\, ground conditions\, and rapid leakage “breakouts.” This leads to substantial gaps between predicted and actual leakage levels\, affecting workforce planning\, resource deployment\, and operational efficiency. \nAt the same time\, District Metered Areas (DMAs)—the foundational units for monitoring and managing distribution networks—vary significantly in their physical and environmental characteristics. Without a robust\, data‑driven way to classify these DMAs\, it is difficult to apply tailored leakage management strategies that reflect each area’s underlying risk profile and operational needs. \nThe overarching challenge is therefore twofold: \n\nTo enhance leakage forecasting models by incorporating additional contextual and historical data\, moving beyond simple historical averaging to reduce prediction error.\nTo develop a systematic method for characterising DMAs using available asset\, environmental\, and operational data\, enabling more targeted\, efficient\, and effective leakage management interventions.\n\nTogether\, these challenges highlight the need for improved analytical methods and models that help water companies optimise resource use\, reduce leakage\, and deliver better outcomes for customers\, society\, and the environment. \nAbout the Partners\nStream is a collaboration between the majority of UK water companies\, supported by industry and civil society partners\, with a shared vision to unlock water data to deliver value to customers\, society and the environment. \nThe Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange (V-KEMS) is an ongoing collaboration between The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS)\, Isaac Newton Institute (INI)\, Newton Gateway to Mathematics and Innovate UK Business Connect and various representatives from the mathematical sciences community. The main aim is to identify a range of virtual approaches that will help address challenges from business and industry\, the third sector\, and other groups outside academia. These challenges may be long-standing or may have arisen directly as a consequence of the present disruption to UK society (such as the pandemic). \nThe collaborative partnership of V-KEMS means that your data will be shared with the organisation hosting the virtual study group\, which for the March 2026 study group is the ICMS. \nThe challenges in-depth\nProblem statement 1 – Forecasting leakage \nThe leakage team at NWL create a forecast throughout the year on how much leakage they expect to happen week to week.  This is used to support decision making for workforce planning and deployment (faster mobilisation to fix leaks) and ultimately be more efficient (less wasted resource in terms of water\, people and money). These forecasts are created by averaging historical (last 5 years) leakage changes on a weekly basis. \nWhilst this approach is nice and simple to run\, it is not particularly accurate and there is often a gap between forecast and actual.  Averaging doesn’t deal very well with situations that are known as leakage breakouts (where lots of leaks happen all at once across an area – usually following a protracted cold or dry spell which causes the ground to move and fracture pipes).  A breakout will create a spike in leakage but the level of leakage generally comes down quicker than the model predicts leading to inaccurate forecasts. \nThe challenge is to find ways to refine the forecast to narrow down the margin of error by looking at how other factors have played a part\, such as preceding (say\, 3 months) weather (particularly protracted dry and cold spells).  At present the forecast only relies upon historic levels\, with no understanding of the context at the time.  Up to 20 years of daily leakage levels are available for each company (Essex and Suffolk Water and Northumbrian Water – so 1 data point per day per company) and leak repair data is also available going back about 5 years for both areas. \nProblem statement 2 – Characterising district meter areas so that different strategic approaches to managing leakage can be applied appropriately \nA district metered area is a discrete area of a water network that has a known boundary and flow meters that monitor the volume of water going into that area every day. On average they tend to feed between 1\,000 and 2\,000 properties and cover about 11km of distribution network\, although there are some outliers on either side of these ranges.  The DMA will have certain physical (and non-physical) characteristics that may individually\, or in concert\, determine whether that DMA is more or less likely to experience leakage under different sets of circumstances.  Factors may include pipe material\, age\, ground conditions\, property type\, pressure (along with many more).  How might we use available data to determine the character of a DMA so that different leakage management strategies can be applied appropriately?  Being able to do this enables focus and intervention to be more fine-tuned\, leading to better leakage performance and ultimately positive outcomes for customers\, society\, the environment and the water companies themselves.
