ICIAM 2027

The ICIAM 2027 congress welcomes applied and industrial mathematicians from academia, research laboratories and industry. The congress can also be very beneficial for graduate students from master programs in applied mathematics, industrial mathematics, computational mathematics, and computational science and engineering.

The theme of ICIAM 2027, “Mathematics for a Sustainable Future”, reflects the growing role of mathematics in addressing some of the most urgent challenges facing society and our planet.

Mathematics is a key enabling technology for sustainability. It provides the foundations for modelling, simulation, optimisation, data analysis, uncertainty quantification, and artificial intelligence — all essential tools for understanding complex systems and supporting informed decision-making.

Accurate climate prediction depends on numerical simulation. Efficient energy systems rely on optimisation and control. Sustainable industrial processes require modelling and digital twins. Responsible artificial intelligence depends on mathematical understanding of algorithms, reliability, and uncertainty. Advances in healthcare, mobility, agriculture, and environmental protection all increasingly depend on mathematical innovation.

For this reason, mathematics is not merely supporting sustainability from the sidelines — it is one of the disciplines helping to shape the sustainable technologies and solutions of the future.

Across the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), mathematics contributes directly to advances in areas such as:

These themes will be visible throughout the scientific programme of ICIAM 2027, in plenary lectures, minisymposia, industrial sessions, and outreach activities.

ICIAM 2027 also recognizes international initiatives such as the UNESCO booklet Mathematics in Action, which demonstrates how mathematical sciences contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals worldwide.
