The 40th ECMI Modelling Week will be held from 18–24 July 2027 at the University of Wuppertal, Germany.
Since 1988, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) has organized an annual Modelling Week for students, bringing together approximately 50–60 European participants for an intensive week of collaborative problem-solving. Working in small, multinational teams, students tackle projects inspired by real-world challenges. Each team is supported by an ECMI instructor, who presents the problem on the first day — typically in non-mathematical terms — and provides guidance throughout the week as the students develop and refine their solutions.
At the end of the week, the teams present their findings to the other participants before documenting their work in a written report. The Modelling Week provides students with practical experience in mathematical modelling while also strengthening their ability to collaborate, communicate and work effectively across national and cultural boundaries.
Participation in a Modelling Week is an integral component of the ECMI Certificate and of many Master’s programs offered by ECMI centers. At the same time, the event is open to many other students who wish to develop their modelling, problem-solving and teamwork skills through this distinctive international experience.
- Note: Modelling Week 2026 is a mandatory part of the MATHS-DISC program, and a number of similar Modelling Weeks or Modelling Camps are organized by ECMI members each year.

Call for Instructors – 40th ECMI Modelling Week
ECMI invites applications from researchers, academics, and industry representatives with an interest in mathematical modelling to join the 40th ECMI Modelling Week.
Instructors will lead small, multinational student groups working on modelling projects based on real-world problems. They will introduce the problem, guide the students throughout the week, and support them in developing and presenting their final results.
Important Note: Please make sure that your proposed problem is a genuine modelling problem and can be solved within one week! Industry representatives without a PhD are also welcome to apply, provided that an academic instructor is available during the Modelling Week to mentor the problem together with them.
Important Dates
- Application Deadline: 31 January 2027
- Notification of Acceptance: 15 February 2027
How to Apply
Please send the title and abstract of your proposed modelling problem via email to Matthias Ehrhardt.
