IMPA — the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro — is one of the world’s leading mathematical research institutes, internationally recognized for excellence in pure, applied, computational, and industrial mathematics. Founded in 1952, IMPA has played a central role in the development of mathematics in Brazil and Latin America, combining frontier research with outstanding graduate education and scientific outreach. The institute offers a vibrant and highly international environment, with faculty members from more than fifteen countries and a steady flow of distinguished visitors, postdoctoral researchers, and students; it attracts some of the strongest young mathematicians from Latin America and around the world. IMPA’s scientific tradition is reflected in the achievements of researchers associated with the institute, including Fields medalists as well as other internationally acclaimed mathematicians who have worked there. In addition to its strength in fundamental research, IMPA has increasingly developed deep connections with industry and applied sciences, notably through Centro Pi, which bridges academia and the private sector by coordinating industry-funded projects in diverse areas of applications of mathematics, data science, optimization, modeling, and computation. Together with its top-notch computational infrastructure, active seminar culture, interdisciplinary collaborations, and exceptional location in a marvelous city of Rio de Janeiro with a strong academic community, IMPA provides an outstanding environment for researchers seeking to pursue ambitious mathematical work with both theoretical depth and real-world impact.
