Conference on Numerical Methods and Applications, NM&A’18 August 20 – 24, 2018, Borovets, Bulgaria

This event is the Ninth edition of a series of international conferences, held every 4 years in Bulgaria. They are organized on rotational principle by the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski, the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics and the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences—all members of ECMI.

These conferences have been a forum for scientists of well-known research groups from various countries, providing an opportunity for sharing ideas and establishing fruitful scientific cooperation. With this issue of the conference (NM&A’18)  we hope to continue this tradition.

During NM&A’18 a wide range of problems, concerning recent theoretical achievements in numerical methods and their applications in mathematical modeling of practical problems will be discussed. Such a meeting among scientists who develop and teach numerical methods, on one hand, and researchers, who use them for solving real-life problems, on the other, would hopefully contribute to mutual development and enrichment. All this is in the spirit of the ECMI goals and mission. Let us note that these conferences are organized with the cooperation of SIAM. The colleagues, who are members of the Bulgarian branch of SIAM (BGSIAM), are deeply involved in the organization and are among the participants of NM&A’18.

The talks, accepted for presentation at the conference (more than 100), cover large variety of topics that include numerical methods for differential and integral equations, approximation techniques in numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, reduced order models and numerical methods, Monte Carlo methods, metaheuristic algorithms and other optimization techniques, computational mechanics, physics, chemistry and biology, advanced and high performance computing.

We expect participants from all over the world—Europe, North America, Asia, Africa. Eighteen PhD students will take part, as well as a large number of young scientists.
