The new Oxford Master’s in Mathematical Sciences (or ‘OMMS’) will admit its first cohort of students in 2018-19.
This master’s degree spans interdisciplinary applications of mathematics as well as recognizing fundamental questions and themes. Students can choose from many different pathways, tailoring the programme to their individual interests and requirements.
Examples of pathways include:
- data science,
- interdisciplinary research in fluid and solid mechanics,
- mathematical biology,
- industrially focussed mathematical modelling,
- (stochastic) partial differential equations
- research in fundamental mathematics.
Students will be able to create a coherent programme of study around a theme if they so wish, whilst still giving them full flexibility, in consultation with their academic advisor, to create the course they want.
Oxford has a world-class reputation in the mathematical sciences. The work of mathematical scientists in Oxford has found applications from tissue engineering and genomics in medicine, and photovoltaics in green energy, to data analytics and applications directly in the commercial sphere. In the last REF period, over a quarter of Oxford’s mathematics and statistics faculty co-authored articles with researchers from outside academia. The departments engaged with 150 companies, enhancing and supporting company research across a wide variety of sectors, explaining processes and reducing costs; developing new products, processes and algorithms. This master’s has a curriculum informed by the very frontiers of such research, and will offer students the opportunity to work with an international group of faculty and peers.
The master’s programme offers a substantial opportunity for independent study and research in the form of a dissertation. The dissertation is undertaken under the guidance of a supervisor and will typically involve investigating and writing in a particular area of mathematical sciences.

Oxford has a strong tradition of masters’ provision: at the same time as OMMS will admit its first cohort of students, the MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing will admit its 41st cohort. Both these programmes complement a range of other masters’ courses in the mathematical sciences at Oxford – each of which has distinctive features and meets a specialised need.
